Couples Therapy

Every couple experiences relationship problems and conflict. These challenges can be about specific events or may involve ongoing negative patterns. The increased stress that comes at these times can make it difficult for a couple to work together toward a solution that is desirable for both parties. I help couples find this solution by working with them collaboratively to strengthen or rebuild a strong emotional bond between them.

I can help with couples therapy in a number of different areas, such as:

My style of therapy is integrative. Over the years of working with couples, I have found that people improve most when provided with a good balance between emotional support and a set of practical tools. To help my clients achieve this, I use a combination of emotionally focused couples therapy (EFT) and pragmatic-experiential therapy for couples (PET-C).

EFT is a structured couples therapy that helps shift a couple's negative interactions into positive ones. Couples often get caught in negative cycles that eat away at intimacy and a sense of having a loving and trusting relationship. These cycles tend to be self-reinforcing and keep you trapped in hurtful interactions. Its strengths lie in helping people more fully identify these cycles, stop them, and create new ones so you can feel close and connected again. This emotional security and sense of comfort helps couples to resolve conflict, communicate better, have more fulfilling sex, and live happier lives.

PET-C is an empirically supported therapy that focuses on teaching couples a "core set of emotional habits that are so powerfully positive that, when people have them, they end up having satisfying long-term relationships over 90% of the time." Its strength lies in helping couples develop better skills for being in a healthy and happy relationship. It strives to help people find a balance between the vital balance between individuality and togetherness. There is a strong emphasis on empowering people so they can be effective in creating the relationship they want.
